Cool things in Technology

May 9, 2008 09:48 by KV4S

I just wrote a blog post on the ALERT site but it basically says Meebo (the web based IM platform) has re-added jabber conference functionality.

Jabber conferences is what is used for ALERT's Storm Spotter chat room.

Secondly, Last night I got a chance to play with the Open Office program which is a free alternative to Microsoft Office and it seems really good. It allows you to open and create documents that are native to Office files.  It seemed to maintain formatting very well! It basically mimics office 2003 in design and saving documents but since office 2007 can open older versions it doesn't seem to be an issue.

Thirdly, Twitter - Basically I'm addicted to it.  It's a microblogging site that allows you to follow poeple and get updates from them on your cell phone if you like and they have a mobile website so you can read or post things there or via text message. Here is a link to my Twitter profile.

KestrelĀ® Wind and Weather Instruments

April 25, 2008 07:28 by KV4S

I heard about these from the WeatherBrains podcast.

"At Nielsen-Kellerman, weather is serious business! NK engineers are determined to make the most accurate and reliable hand-held weather devices available. You might find a weather meter that is a little less expensive, but you won't find one that works better."

I finally had Lasik!

March 28, 2008 20:26 by KV4S

I had Lasik Thursday!
So far I’m very pleased with the results... at today's checkup I was reading off the 20/20 line and was able to see a couple letters on the 20/15.

I still have some haziness and slight blurriness they say will go away in time but I have it now because the cornea is still a little swollen. (A touch up is something I have available if needed within the first year or year and a half)

The Wednesday pre-op exam was more difficult than the surgery in my opinion because it took longer and they had to hold my lids open to take good pictures.

The surgery wasn't bad the longest part was all the drops and medication to get me ready I was only in the laser room 15 min's or so and most of that was getting me ready for the laser I think they were saying the laser is only on a few seconds.  I felt no pain for the whole thing.

After I got home and the drops were wearing off was the worst part because I had a lot of stinging and my eyes were watering but the pain reliever kicked in quick and put me to sleep... when I woke up they never bothered me again.

Overall I'm glad I overcame my fears and had it done.

I had it done at Michelson Laser Vision at the Summit.

Website Update's 3/23/2008

March 23, 2008 11:01 by KV4S

I upgraded the website to BlogEngine 1.3 the most noteabe feature is the support for mobile web browsers!

I'm in particular waiting for the 1.4 release becuase it will fix a bug I reported for a date/time conflict between the web and the rss feed.

It will also fix the multiples in rss readers from time to time.

I also added a new tab called Web Presence... the idea is i have accounts on other website services across the net so it would be nice to be able to distribute those via my site.

As i was waiting on my site to publish last night I also signed up for Twitter.... I'm not 100% sure I'm going to like it but a lot of podcast i'm listening to is talking about it so i though i would at least see what it's about. The link is in the Web Presense tab and i'll add it to the blog roll probably by the time you read this.

Later, Russell
